LED Luminaires - the new Wi-Fi?
LED luminaire technology has been developed to allow them to transmit data at a high frequency. The first installation of a 'visible light communication network' using light fittings has been implemented in the US.
The technology works by rapidly flickering advanced LEDs to encode data, that can be received by current wireless electrical products. Whilst the technology isn't yet commercially viable, it currently leads the way for 'invisible' or seamless integration of networks and the like in the future workplace.
There are other advantages to such a system - VLC systems do not interfere with radio-frequency electronics, meaning it's suitable for use in hospitals and aircraft.
